The Bromfield boys’ varsity soccer team triumphed in its Central Division 4 semifinal game at Nashoba Regional High School on Nov. 8, beating the Advanced Math and Science Academy’s Eagles by a score of 4-2. The Trojans now advance to the finals and will play Sutton at Nashoba Regional High School in Bolton at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Bromfield entered the contest as the number six seed in the tournament; AMSA was the number two seed. To start the game, both teams applied pressure to each other with strong offensive play. Bromfield got three corner kicks in the thick of the game, while AMSA made Trojan goalie Ben Cadman work to fend off five goal attempts.
Trojans first to strike
Bromfield struck first, though, with freshman Jack Armstrong scoring on an assist from sophomore Cole Stecyk. Senior Adam Lorenz-Kruk tried to capitalize on the early scoring but failed in his two attempts. Then a foul on Armstrong led to a free kick for the Eagles. Charlie Lane took the kick and sent it into the Bromfield goal to tie the score at 1-1.
The Trojans failed to regain control of the game until they were awarded a penalty kick. The kick was taken by Stecyk after some deliberation in a timeout. Stecyk was able to score, putting Bromfield ahead, 2-1. The half ended with that score, as AMSA failed to even things up.
AMSA started the second half aggressively, nearly scoring on several occasions as Bromfield maintained its lead with a strong defense. Persistence paid off for the Trojans as Kruk scored an unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 lead. Bromfield attempted to capitalize with another, but multiple players took shots that missed and fell short of putting the game out of reach. AMSA took advantage of Bromfield’s mistakes, with Paul Langton scoring the second goal for the Eagles, making it 3-2 Bromfield.
The Eagles wreaked havoc when they went on the offense, charging through the Trojan defense to get to Bromfield’s goal. But Cadman made three straight saves and kept Bromfield’s lead intact. In the last few minutes of the game, sophomore Omar Al-Homsi sealed the game with a final goal on an assist from Kruk. With that, Bromfield came away the semifinal victor.
