The Bromfield varsity field hockey team defeated Lunenburg 2-1 at home on Friday, Oct. 10.
The first goal was scored by Bromfield off a penalty corner. Junior Suzy Opalka sent the ball to the top of the circle where senior captain Colby Newsham waited. Newsham received the ball, wound up, and took a shot on net. Junior Maddie Ragno tapped the ball past the Lunenberg goalkeeper and scored the first goal of the game.
Bromfield took 12 shots on net during the first half, keeping the Lunenburg goalie on her toes. The Lady Trojans had a few fast breaks in the first half, including one from Ragno. She dribbled the ball down the field and took a shot, but her hit was saved.
However, Lunenburg was able to match Bromfield with its own series of fast breaks. Senior Bromfield goalie Moira Morgan stopped a Lunenberg forward’s fast break and subsequent shot, making an important save for the team. Even with Lunenburg’s powerful offensive move, the first half was dominated by Bromfield. Morgan faced only two shots and made both saves.
The first half ended 1-0 Bromfield, and the tight score rallied both teams. They both screamed intense cheers before the start of the second half. Within 10 minutes of play, Newsham scored the Trojans’ second goal of the game.
A back-and-forth battle
The second half was a consistent, back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Both were determined to score. Within minutes of Bromfield’s second goal of the game, Lunenburg’s Brianna Hamel came barreling down the field and took a shot on Morgan. Morgan lunged after it, but the ball went just short of Morgan’s left pad and banged off the left corner of the net, putting Lunenburg on the scoreboard.
After the two second-half goals, play returned to the back-and-forth battle, and Bromfield ended with a 2-1 victory. The Lady Trojans are now in second place in the Wachusett C League with a 10-1-1 record.
The Lady Trojans played on Tuesday, Oct. 14, against Oakmont at home in a hard-fought game that ended in a tie. Oakmont holds the first-place spot in the Mid-Wach Division C. Later in the week, the varsity girls will face off against St. Bernard’s in a “Field Hockey Fighting FA” game to raise awareness and money for Freidrich’s Ataxia, a muscular dystrophy genetic disorder.
Julia Hoggins and Casey Russell are seniors at the Bromfield School. Russell is a member of the girls’ varsity field hockey team.
