Ribbon cutting at Harvard Solar Garden
The offices of State Senator Jamie Eldridge and State Representative Jen Benson have announced that a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first member-owned, community-shared solar garden in the state of Massachusetts will be held Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. at the Harvard Solar Garden. The Harvard Solar Garden is located at 295 Ayer Road, which is just behind the plaza that houses Sorrento’s Pizza. Engineering and design assistance was provided by Solar Design Associates, a Harvard business since 1974. The public is invited to attend.
Read to Winston
The Harvard Public Library will offer children a chance to read to Winston the Therapy Dog on Wednesdays, July 2 and 16, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Reading to Winston is a good way to bolster a child’s reading confidence. Registration is required; call the Children’s Room at 978-456-2381 to make a special appointment with Winston.
Staffing at town beach
Lifeguards will be on duty Friday, June 20, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to cover the after-school crowd. Hours change to 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting on Saturday, June 21, through Sunday, June 29. When swimming and boating lessons start on Monday, June 30, the schedule will be as follows:
- Saturday and Sunday: Lifeguards will be on duty from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for free swim.
- Monday through Friday morning: Lifeguards will be on duty for swimming and boating lessons, which take place from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a small “free swim cool-off area” and a lane for laps open during swimming lessons.
- Monday through Friday afternoon: Lifeguards are on duty for free swim from noon to 5 p.m.
Parking lot attendants will be on duty during the same hours as the lifeguards. Alexandra Luck, director of programs at the beach, reminds citizens that during the hours that beach staff are on duty, all town beach rules and town bylaws will be strictly enforced. Town bylaws are also in effect when the beach is open, from sunrise to 10 p.m., even if the beach is not fully staffed.
Sign up for swimming, boating lessons
Residents are advised to sign up now for summer swimming and boating lessons at Harvard’s town beach. Red Cross-certified instructors will teach the lessons, which cost $30 for each two-week session. Lessons run from June 30 through Aug. 8.
Swimming lessons include Water Tots for children 6 months to 4 years and their parents, and swimming lessons for children ages 4 and older. Canoeing, kayaking, and sailing classes are offered for beginners and advanced students.
