This week police made 12 motor vehicle stops, which resulted in four citations or written warnings and eight verbal warnings.
Tuesday, April 29
A Jacob Gates Road resident called at 5:27 a.m. to notify police that he had given someone permission to hunt turkeys on his property. At 9:40 a.m. a caller reported that there was a man sleeping in a car with the motor running at McCurdy Track. Police say the man told the investigating officer that he had pulled off the road because he had taken allergy medicine and was feeling drowsy. However, he said he was feeling better and that he would move along.
Wednesday, April 30
Police stopped to assist the driver of a disabled car on Ayer Road at 8:23 a.m. and stood by until a tow truck arrived. Fire personnel were called to a Slough Road home at 8:42 a.m., where significant smoke had been reported. Police say the smoke was from a wood stove that wasn’t sufficiently drafted and that the fire officers extinguished the fire. A resident on East Bare Hill Road called at 10:15 a.m. to request that an officer be present when a vendor arrived at her home to install equipment, as she no longer wanted the services of that vendor and was concerned about the potential for a confrontation. An officer was sent to the home, and the vendor came and left without incident. Emergency personnel responded to a medical emergency at Foxglove Apartments on Ayer Road at 2:25 p.m.; the ambulance transported a woman to Emerson Hospital. Responding to a fire alarm received from a home on West Bare Hill Road at 7:14 p.m., fire officers found the alarm had been set off by smoke from cooking.
Thursday, May 1
At 10:51 a.m. a staff member at the public library called to report concerns about two letters the library received from an inmate at a Florida prison, requesting information. Police say the inmate had inadvertently sent his request to the Harvard Public Library instead of Harvard University. Emergency personnel responded to a medical call at Foxglove Apartments on Ayer Road at 11:48 a.m. and transported a person to the hospital. The chief of police stopped to investigate a car parked in a no-parking area at the General Store at 1:25 p.m. Emergency personnel were called to a home on Ayer Road at 6:01 p.m. and transported a woman to Emerson Hospital.
Friday, May 2
A caller traveling on Route 2 eastbound at 7:53 a.m. reported a vehicle being driven erratically on that road. The call was referred to the State Police barracks in Leominster. At 12:35 p.m. an elementary school staff member called with concerns about a man whom she had observed trying to get onto the school’s field. The responding officer located the man and determined there was no cause for concern. Emergency personnel were dispatched to a home on Babbitt Lane at 2:55 p.m. and transported a woman to Nashoba Valley Medical Center. Someone called the station at 4:45 p.m. to ask that an officer be present when she picked up her horse from the barn where she had been boarding it, as she anticipated a potential confrontation with the owner. The responding officer reported that the woman picked up her horse without incident. At 6:05 p.m. a Littleton Road resident called for police assistance with an out-of-control juvenile. The responding officer spoke with the youth and the parents and restored the peace.
Saturday, May 3
At 8:38 a.m. a caller reported that a green pickup truck had been operating erratically on Ayer Road and had subsequently pulled into the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot. Police did not locate the vehicle. A resident on Still River Depot Road reported seeing smoke from a possible brush fire at the Oxbow Wildlife Refuge at 2:10 p.m. Fire officers and police determined that the smoke was coming from the direction of Devens, and they contacted the fire department there. Devens officers confirmed that there was a brush fire on the Delta range. While performing a random license plate check on a car traveling on Ayer Road at 6:08 p.m., police learned that the vehicle was unregistered. The driver, an Ayer resident, was summonsed on charges of driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and operating with a revoked registration. At 6:36 p.m. another officer performing a random license plate check pulled over a car being driven by a West Roxbury woman and issued her a summons for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and driving with a revoked registration. A Littleton Road resident called at 6:39 p.m. to report concerns about a white pickup truck in the driveway of a vacant house across the street. Police say the truck belonged to the owner of the vacant house. A homeowner on Massachusetts Avenue called at 8:32 p.m. to notify police that there would be a cooking fire at that residence.
Sunday, May 4
A Prospect Hill Road resident called at 4:12 p.m. to report that a large black bear had just left her yard and was headed down the hill. At 4:22 p.m. another Prospect Hill Road resident called to report that there was a large tree limb in the road, blocking traffic. Police dispatched the Department of Public Works to take care of it.
Monday, May 5
An officer on patrol on Still River Road stopped at 2:28 a.m. to investigate a man and woman walking along the road, carrying camping gear. The couple said that they had just come from a place along the pond, behind Bellevue Cemetery, where they had had a campfire. Police say the officer checked the fire to make sure it had been extinguished and then issued a summons to the pair for trespassing in the cemetery after hours. Emergency personnel responded to a medical call on Slough Road at 5:36 a.m. and transported a man to Emerson Hospital. Someone stopped at the station at 7:37 a.m. to report seeing a vehicle being driven erratically on Ayer Road. An officer located the vehicle in question and spoke with the driver. At 6:39 p.m. an officer stopped a car on Still River Road and issued a summons to an Arlington man for speeding and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. An officer on patrol near the Common stopped to investigate a car parked in the middle of the road at 10:33 p.m. Police say the driver was lost and was reading a map. He was asked to move out of the roadway.
