The Bromfield boys’ outdoor track and field team placed fifth out of seven teams at the Midland Wachusett C League championship meet last Wednesday and Thursday in Lunenburg with a score of 58 points. The Trojans had a strong showing in all events and did particularly well in the one- and two- mile races as well as in the relays.
The team got off to a solid start in the running events and the pole vault, which were held on Wednesday. Senior Sam Dyer was the only Trojan to place in field events with his second-place finish in the pole vault. In the sprinting events, junior Hunter Ashley placed fourth and third in the 100- meter and 200-meter events respectively. Also scoring for the Trojans was freshman Paul Chapman, who ran in a very competitive 800m and came in sixth.
Bromfield scored the most points in the one-mile, with sophomore Nick Steele coming in first and freshman Will Day coming in fifth.
Rounding off the Trojans’ score in the distance events were junior Price Day and eighth-grader Ryell deRuijter’s first and sixth finishes in the two-mile.
The Trojan relay teams also did well, with all three teams scoring points. The 4x100m team, consisting of junior Alvin Li, freshman Tristan Cronin, eighth-grader Jonathan Gall, and junior Nick Norcross, placed sixth. Coming in third was the 4x400m team, with runners Norcross, junior Matt Polimou, Cronin, and Dyer. Placing first was the 4x800m team, consisting of Steele, Will Day, Polimou and Price Day.
Two meet records set
Bromfield runners broke two league records, breaking the one-mile and 4x800m relay times.
In the one-mile, Nick Steele smashed the record, formerly 4:41.0 and held by Narragansett since 1996, by running an impressive time of 4:34.47.
In the 4x800m relay, the team of Steele, Will Day, Polimou, and Price Day beat the record, which dated from 2004, with a time of 8:43.5. It previously was 8:47.6 and held by Lunenburg.
The team is currently preparing for the Central-Western Division 2 championship meet, which will be held at Fitchburg State University on Saturday.
