Dogs: What’s the right answer for our rural lives?

January 31, 2014

My commiseration with Henry and Sandy Lefkovits over the loss of their fondly cared-for chickens, lost to fowl-devastating dogs, brought back memories of a similar incident on my own land.

My husband and our neighbor John Ransom suffered a great loss long ago, during a drought, as a result of a roadside walker’s cigarette fire. We removed trees, fenced part of our land for pasture, and watched our sheep eat a mass of undergrowth to park-like beauty.

Eventually a large dog leapt over our fencing, killed all ten lambs, and left. He returned a day later, but alerted, I climbed over the fence with a 5-foot maple pole, frightened and cornered the dog, and called for police help. The officer bravely collared the killer with a rope and drove off.

What is the answer for our rural lives here?
