Veterans Day award ceremony
Harvard’s Office of Veteran Services will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony Monday, Nov. 11, promptly at 11 a.m. at Center on the Common (old library). All are invited; uniforms are not required. Seating will open at 10 a.m. The annual Veteran of the Year, also known as “the PJ,” in honor of long-time American Legion Post Commander Paul Johnston, will be presented to co-recipients Maj. (Ret.) Steven M. Cronin and Nancy J.F. Cronin, a former major in the US Army. Refreshments will be served.
Apple crisp sale to benefit cross country team
The Bromfield cross country team is selling trays of homemade frozen apple crisp for the upcoming holiday season for $15. A 10- by 12-inch tray feeds 10 to 12 people; just heat and serve. Order before Nov. 22 and make your Thanksgiving easy. Proceeds support the purchase of new uniforms for the team. To place an order, contact Sue at suetoll@charter.net.
Donations needed for benefit auction
The Nashua River Watershed Association will run a holiday online auction beginning Nov. 19 and ending on Dec. 10. The auction offers bidders the chance to find unique gifts while supporting the Nashua River Watershed Association’s work in protecting natural resources and providing environmental education programs in 32 watershed communities.
The NWRA is asking for donations to the auction, including such items as sports tickets, electronics, professional services, fine jewelry, antiques, tours of unique places, and gift certificates. For businesses, the auction provides a way to connect with residents and with a broader online audience who enjoy supporting nonprofit causes as they shop; business logos and hyperlinks to the business website will appear on the auction website alongside the donated item. Dispatch service now at Devens
At noon on Oct. 29 Harvard’s dispatch service switched over to the new Nashoba Valley Regional Emergency Dispatch Center at Devens, which now handles all 911 and non-emergency calls from town residents. The Harvard police station, however, remains open for business on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The station is closed on Sundays, but residents can call the dispatch center during off hours using the blue phone located just inside the station doors.
Harvard PTO Book Fair starts Nov. 18
The Harvard PTO will run its annual Scholastic Book Fair, Monday, Nov. 18, through Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Hildreth Elementary School library. The fair will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The PTO will also host a family night Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. The public, parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to attend and shop anytime during these hours. The book fair will offer hundreds of quality books in every price range, interest, and reading level for grades kindergarten through six, and will also offer titles from adult best-seller lists. PTO volunteers can assist you in finding the right books.
Transfer Station now accepts polystyrene
The Harvard Transfer Station now accepts clean, rinsed polystyrene plastic #6, or Styrofoam, for recycling. Residents are encouraged to bring their clean, rinsed meat and produce trays, packaging material, and take-out containers and cups to the transfer station during regular hours. Packing peanuts are not accepted. The Harvard Transfer Station is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
