HES School Council has opening
There is one opening for a School Council parent representative at the Hildreth Elementary School. The council is a state-mandated advisory committee composed of parent, teacher, and community members and is co-chaired by the school principal and a parent representative. Parent members are selected by HES parents in PTO-run elections.
According to an FAQ page on the HES website, the state law specifies that school councils assist principals in the following tasks:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
- Reviewing the annual school budget
- Formulating an annual school improvement plan

Community economic development grants available
The Citizens Bank Foundation is calling for applications for its “Growing Communities” initiative in Massachusetts. Through the Growing Communities initiative, the Citizens Bank Foundation will award up to $150,000 in grants ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 for projects that contribute to the resiliency of neighborhoods by fostering economic growth.
According to a statement from Rep. Jennifer Benson’s office, the initiative is designed to promote and make an investment in neighborhood revitalization based on the existing assets of a community. Applications may include efforts for neighborhood revitalization in distressed communities, support for local economic activity, creation of small businesses, job creation, and other creative and collaborative responses to make a neighborhood a better place to live and work.
A complete list of the requirements for projects eligible for the Growing Communities initiative can be found on the Citizens Bank website at: www.citizensbank.com/community/corporate/grants.aspx. The application deadline is Thursday, Sept. 19.
Fall soccer program seeks volunteers and players
Nashoba Unified Sports is registering volunteers and special athletes now for its fall soccer program that begins Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, at Stow Community Park, Old Bolton Road, in Stow. The program pairs athletes with special needs with student volunteers. Weekly sessions, Sundays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. through October, include practices and games. Participants may attend some or all or the sessions. Kids are welcome to simply go to one session to check it out.
Anyone considering the program, either as a volunteer or special athlete, should let the organizers know as soon as possible. Community Preservation grant application due Sept. 27
The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) is accepting applications for fiscal 2015 projects. Organizations or citizens that seek funding for projects related to historical preservation, open space, recreation, or community housing are encouraged to complete the Request for Funding form posted on the Harvard town website and submit it electronically, along with relevant supporting documents, to Julie Doucet in the Harvard Selectmen’s office at jdoucet@harvard.ma.us.
The deadline for CPC submissions for fiscal 2015 is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Paper copies should be submitted by Thursday, Sept. 26, because Town Hall is closed Fridays. Prospective applicants can access the Request for Funding form for fiscal 2015 at www.harvard.ma.us/Pages/HarvardMA_BComm/Preservation/index.
