Selectmen make the right choice

July 12, 2013

In an encouraging display of accountability, the selectmen this week chose to “move the ball forward,” in the words of Selectman Leo Blair, by agreeing to solicit subcontractor bids on Town Hall and delaying a move to temporary offices on Ayer Road until a better estimate of the cost of the project is in hand. “I think that we have an obligation to try and execute on the vote, the plan that was promulgated at Town Meeting and … narrowly approved at the ballot box. I think we need to execute on that,” Blair said. “Our job…is to give people choices.” The selectmen could have chosen to delay the project, but the plan adopted this week keeps it moving and aims to place ultimate authority for its course where it belongs: in the hands of Town Meeting.
