By a score of 3-2, the Bromfield boys tennis team narrowly defeated Mt. Greylock in the state Division 3 semi-finals at the Ludlow Tennis Club on June 12. The Trojans will now face-off against Martha’s Vineyard for the title of Division 3 state champion at St. Johns High School in Shrewsbury on Monday, June 17, at 3:30 p.m.
Going into Central Division 3 playoffs earlier this month, Bromfield was the top seeded team in its section, with a win-loss record of 14-1 (.933), and the team successfully volleyed its way into the state division finals. But the upcoming match promises to be its toughest one yet. Bromfield’s opponent, Martha’s Vineyard, was the second seeded team in South Division 3, with a 16-1 (.941) record for the year going into its sectional playoffs. In each of those matches, the Vinyarders shut out every opponent 5-0, and on Wednesday, they handily defeated Weston, the East Division 3 champ, by a score of 4-1.
For the Trojans, winning the match against Mt. Greylock on Wednesday was no easy task. Jaymie Davis and Kevin Sun won their singles matches, but Drew Banker lost his. The first doubles team of Lucas Hickock and Nick Hildreth lost its match, but the second doubles team of Charlie Friedrich and Dan Poustovalov came through, winning in the third set.
