Presidential lunch
Wednesday, Feb. 20. Bromfield student Ryan Kennedy will prepare and serve a noon luncheon fit for a president, with Thomas Jefferson chicken fricassee, presidential honey walnut salad, tavern hot cider, George Washington cherry cobbler, and Lady Bird Johnson lemon bundt cake. Wednesday, Feb. 20. “Red,” at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability. The trip will leave Hildreth House at 1 p.m. and return by 5 p.m. The cost is $25.00.
Friday, March 8. The COA will tour the Boston Public Library and Trinity Church. The tour will highlight the architecture of Charles Follen McKim and Philip Johnson, as well as the works of famed sculptors and painters. We’ll also attend an organ recital at Trinity Church. This will be followed by lunch. We will leave Hildreth House at 9 a.m. and return by 3 p.m. Cost is $10 plus lunch.
2013 tax work-off program deadline coming up
Applications for the 2013 Senior Tax Work-off Program must be completed and returned by Feb. 28. The applications are available online at the Council on Aging page at harvard.ma.us or at Hildreth House.
The Senior Tax Work-off program is a way for seniors to work at various jobs throughout town to earn up to $1000 off their property tax bill. Seniors must reapply for the program every year. Participants must be over 60 and have owned and resided in their Harvard home for at least one year. There is one abatement allowed per property.
Winter closing notice
In inclement weather, whenever the schools are closed, Hildreth House will be closed as well for COA programs and meals. Local Boston channels list school closings, delays, and early dismissals. The MART van will not run on days that the schools are closed due to bad weather. For delayed openings and early closings, the van will follow the schools’ hours for that day. Checking on the elderly during a storm
Although Harvard escaped the full force of the recent storm “Nemo,” it was a vivid reminder of how hard winter can be for our neighbors and friends who are elderly and/or living alone.
The Council on Aging is developing a list of seniors and others who would like to be “checked on” in a storm. The list includes not only those with serious medical issues, but also a number of elders who are in good health but living alone. This service is not limited to residents over the age of 60, but is offered to anyone with a health issue or who lives alone and wants to make sure someone is checking on them. If there is cause for concern about someone’s welfare, we can also alert the police and/or fire department. If you would like to be on this list give us a call at 978-456-4120 and speak to Debbie.
