Basketball program seeks participants
Nashoba Unified Sports, the local program pairing special athletes with typical age-mates, invites student volunteers and special athletes from Harvard to participate for the 2013 winter season. The program begins Jan. 13 and meets Sunday afternoons 2:30 to 4 p.m., January through March (excluding February vacation) at the Hale Middle School in Stow. Practices will continue weekly through March with the exception of the February vacation weekends. Weekly attendance is not required. Lucia’s raffle to benefit Loaves & Fishes
Throughout the month of December, Lucia’s Tavola of Ayer has pledged to donate 10 percent of all gift certificates sold as well as raffle a VIP chef’s dinner for up to six people. All proceeds will benefit the Loaves & Fishes food pantry of Devens.
The VIP dinner will be the grand prize for the holiday raffle and will be hosted by Lucia’s owner/chef Mark diCicco. In addition to the grand prize, five winners will receive gift certificates to diCicco’s newest restaurant in downtown Ayer, “Markoh’s on Main,” which is slated to open later this month.
Gift certificates and raffle entries ($5 each) are available at Lucia’s Tavola or by calling the restaurant at 978-931-4837. Raffle winners will be announced on Jan. 7.
Winter session of vocational interest program begins Jan. 16
The winter session of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School’s VIP program (Vocational Interest) begins Wednesday, Jan. 16, for middle-school students in Ashburnham, Harvard, Holden, Lunenburg, Princeton, Sterling, Westminster, and Winchendon.
Through the program, seventh- and eighth-graders are invited to explore a number of career and technical programs before deciding which high school to attend.
The winter session runs from 3 to 5 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Jan. 16, 23, 30 and Feb. 6 and 13.
Participating students will spend two hours each week exploring a total of five career programs. Offerings this session include: auto body/collision repair technology, cabinet making, house carpentry, computers, cosmetology, culinary arts, drafting technology, early childhood education, electrical, engineering technology, graphic communications, masonry, plumbing, and welding/metal fabrication.
Transportation is provided, free of charge, to and from sending schools. The deadline for registering is Friday, Jan. 4. There is no cost for the program.
