George B. Banfield, 73, of Boxborough, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Kindred Transitional and Rehabilitation in Natick.
He was the loving partner of 30 years of Jayne Purcell, and is also survived by a nephew, Carl Wright of New Britain, Conn., and a niece, Donna Chase of Marlow, N.H.
Born in Boston, Banfield was the son of the late George and Edith (Wenz) Banfield, and brother of the late June Wright. A former resident of Somerville, Medford, Billerica, and Arlington, he settled in Boxborough in the 1960s. A graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Banfield served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and his first job was with Nelson Homebuilders. For most of his life, he owned and operated Better Bilt Homes, with most projects based in Harvard, Boxborough, Acton, Concord, and Stow. He was the former assistant building inspector in Boxborough, and was a former board member of the Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School in Lexington.
For many years Banfield was an active member of the Charles A. Welch Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Maynard. He loved animals, and is remembered as a quiet, humble man; a good listener with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.
Graveside services in South Cemetery, Boxborough, were private. Because animals were so close to Banfield’s heart, donations may be made in his name to the MSPCA-Angell, 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.
