Weekends in Harvard have been quiet all summer, but with school back in session, the town has quickly returned to its active self. This month offers plenty of opportunities for family fun for the benefit of good causes.
Take, for example, the Run for the Hills trail race on Sunday. This 5K gives runners and walkers a whirlwind tour of local conservation areas and the proceeds benefit the Harvard Conservation Trust, which has been instrumental in preserving those areas and Harvard’s natural beauty.
Also for the active, the Harvard Firefighters Association is holding the third annual Ken Harrod Memorial Bike Ride on Saturday, Sept. 22. Participants can choose a 9-, 16-, or 50-mile loop. According to the firefighters, the ride is a significant source of funding for potentially life-saving equipment, like the thermal imaging cameras reported on in the Press this week.
Running and biking not your idea of fun? The Harvard Lions Club is hosting the Fall Festival on Sept. 15 and 16. There’s always something for everyone at this classic autumn event, and the proceeds, the Lions say, help causes like special education and the ambulance squad.
Finally, there is a pressing need for bone marrow donations to help patients like the children who attend Camp Sunshine in Maine, where more than 70 Harvard-area residents have volunteered in the past year. The local group is sponsoring a bone marrow drive this Sunday at Holy Trinity Parish from 1:30 to 4 p.m. We encourage you to read the information on marrow.org, decide if the commitment is right for you, and, if so, sign up on Sunday.
