I recently attended the public information meeting held by the Municipal Building Committee to discuss the proposed Town Hall and Hildreth House renovations/additions. The architects presented the schematic phase of the project, illustrating several options for each building. The goal of the meeting was to solicit public response. I was impressed by the architect’s presentation.
The Municipal Building Committee did a good job of getting the word out as there must have been close to 50 people in attendance. The architects fielded many questions and comments in what was a very open and inclusive dialog. There were many good suggestions. Everyone was urged to contact the Municipal Building Committee (MBCMailit@gmail.com) with any more comments or ideas.
One thing that upset me was a comment made near the end of the presentation by one of the Selectmen. The comment was that the committee had not adequately gotten the word out and that those in attendance in no way represented the town. I found this comment personally insulting, and I would imagine other people did who had taken the time to attend the meeting and provide input.
I now understand why committees are having trouble attracting new members. Who wants to be treated like that? When committees in town do not receive respect and support from the Selectmen, it undermines the spirit and effectiveness of small town government.
