Former longtime HES teacher

Gloria A. Thiers, 73, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Stow, Mass., died on Sept. 17 after a brief illness while vacationing in Maine.

Gloria was born and raised in Dunkirk, NY. She held an undergraduate degree from SUNY, Fredonia, and a master’s degree from Cambridge College. She was a long-term member of Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice, Fla. Her smile and warm positive spirit will be missed.

She was a dedicated and caring elementary school teacher for more than 30 years. Twenty-five of those years were spent in the Harvard, Mass., school system.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Bob; son Scott Robert and his wife Patricia of Bristol, VA; son Douglas Michael and his wife Cynthia of Winchendon, Mass.; four grandchildren; sisters Janice Waite of Cassadaga, NY, and Sue Cimisi of Hudson, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of Gloria’s life is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Venice. A gathering of friends and family will follow at Jacaranda West Country Club. It was Gloria’s wish that any memorial donations be used to help others. Gifts might be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or the All Faiths Food Bank of Sarasota.
