Giving recognition where it is due

July 1, 2011

I would like to thank Mrs. Schwarz (letter to the editor, June 24) for reminding me that although I had apologized privately to Mrs. Karen Bucholc, Mr. Earl Maurer, and Dr. Tom Jefferson for my oversight at graduation, I had not done so publicly, which would have given each of them some of the recognition they truly deserve.

Since her arrival at the Bromfield School, Mrs. Bucholc has been a larger-than-life personality and a master of her craft in teaching English. It has been my pleasure to both observe and participate in Karen’s classes, and the Bromfield School is losing a one-of-a-kind teacher. Our graduates who had Mrs. Bucholc as a teacher received a special gift in the opportunity to learn from her. I thank her for all that she has given and done for the students of Bromfield; she will be truly missed.

As a Special Education Teacher, Mr. Earl Maurer may not have had the opportunity to work with every student at Bromfield, but his impact on those students with whom he did work was impressive. Both as a reading teacher and as a sixth-grade special education teacher, Mr. Maurer was dedicated to meeting the needs of each of his students. Earl was also committed to helping each child make the most of the opportunities that Bromfield presented them with and he will be missed by all who had the chance to work with him.

The role of superintendent of schools can be a challenging and lonely position. Having had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Thomas Jefferson over the past five years, I continue to be impressed with both his knowledge and his commitment to providing the students of the Harvard School District with the best education possible. I appreciate everything he has done for the Bromfield School and Hildreth Elementary School during his tenure here, and I wish him all the best in his next position.

I wish all the best to Mrs. Bucholc, Mr. Maurer, and Dr. Jefferson as they move into the next phase of their lives. On behalf of the entire Bromfield School Community I thank Karen, Earl, and Tom for sharing themselves and their service with our community.

Jim O’Shea
Principal, the Bromfield School
