Voter registration deadline next week
The last day to register to vote or to change address for the Annual Town Meeting and election is Friday, March 11, 2011. The Town Clerk’s office will be open for voter registration from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Volunteers sought to help senior citizens
Nashoba Associated Boards of Health/Nashoba Nursing Service & Hospice (NNS&H), in collaboration with Central Mass. Area Health Education Center, Inc. (CMAHEC), seeks people age 55 and older to engage in volunteer service to help improve the health of older adults in the communities served by these organizations.
Nashoba Associated Boards of Health/Nashoba Nursing Service & Hospice has partnered with CMAHEC to support and bring the AmeriCorps Healthy Aging Program to local communities. Using the AmeriCorps Volunteer Model, NNS& H seeks volunteers to learn and offer the following programs: chronic disease self-management; a matter of balance—a fall prevention program; and healthy eating for successful living.
Volunteers will be trained to provide health education and supportive activities to seniors in member towns. NNS&H and CMAHEC offer comprehensive orientation and training. Once training is complete, volunteers will be qualified to offer Healthy Aging programs to communities, with support from the Community Health Department staff. Throughout their service, volunteers will be offered ongoing personal and professional development opportunities.
AmeriCorps Healthy Aging Program volunteers are asked to provide 300 service hours between the date of their enrollment and Aug. 31, 2011. Upon completing 300 service hours, volunteers will receive travel stipends and education awards, based on hours worked. The education award can be used by volunteers or transferred to children or grandchildren to pay for educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay qualified student loans.

Municipal Buildings Committee to host open houses
The Municipal Buildings Committee invites residents to attend an open house of the three historic town center buildings discussed in the MBC report to the selectmen. Town Hall, Hildreth House, and the old library will be open on a series of dates in March. Members of MBC will be on hand to answer questions, and residents are encouraged to come and share their memories of these three buildings. People can tour the buildings, learning stories of their past lives, seeing the present needs, and envisioning future opportunities.
- At Hildreth House, visitors can see the cherry paneling and grand staircase, the butler’s pantry, the soapstone sink, the shoeshine seat, and the sweeping view to the Common.
- In upper Town Hall, people can visit the balcony loft where overflow from a town meeting sat, see the Steinway piano, and walk on what was touted as “the best dancing floor for miles around.”
- The Pilot Project at the old library has created a mirrored movement room, a visitor’s information desk, and exhibit space under the huge skylight.
Children are welcome to the open house, and refreshments will be served. People can start the tour at any location and walk, drive, or take a shuttle van to the next site.
Tour dates are:
- Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Wednesday, March 16, from 3 to 6 p.m.
- Sunday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Tours will be held despite inclement weather
Presentation scheduled on World of Difference program
In response to the Massachusetts anti-bullying initiative, Bromfield’s new World of Difference® program (in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League) has been established and strives to eliminate bias and stereotyping in our schools. Community members and parents are invited to come learn about the program and participate in an intriguing activity facilitated by high school Peer Trainers. The U.S. Army Garrison at Devens has issued a notice marking the following activities that will result in increased noise from the base:
