With five races out of six complete, Bromfield’s ski racing teams continue their season-long strong performances, and both boys and girls teams have climbed up the league standings, with one race to go. In slalom racing last week, Bromfield’s girls once again topped the podium with a win, while the boys skied solidly into third place. And in giant slalom racing this Tuesday, the girls tied for first with Acton-Boxborough and took a commanding lead over Westford’s girls for the league title. The boys varsity team raced to a second-place tie with Acton-Boxborough in giant slalom, and with that result moved into sole possession of second place in the season standings behind a powerful Westford squad.
In last week’s slalom, junior Jackie Sampson led Bromfield’s girls across the finish line with a season-best second place, with senior Tory Sowizral right behind in third. Freshmen Sarah Rowse and Gabrielle Doben cracked the top 10, finishing fifth and 10th; senior captain Maggie Rooney closed out the points for Bromfield with a 13th-place finish, with sister Lizzie Rooney right behind in 14th.
Bromfield’s junior varsity girls all finished in the top 12 out of 30 racers, with freshman Karina Edwards first for JV, junior Jillian Saydah fourth, sophomore Jackie Magoun fifth, freshmen Jess Williams and Lauren Masters seventh and ninth, respectively, and eighth-grader Emily Erdos 12th.
This week in giant slalom, Rowse completed the sweep of the season’s GS races, winning for a third time. Sowizral bagged sixth, Sampson was eighth, Doben 12th, and Lizzie Rooney 18th, to secure the points for the first-place tie. On the JV side, Jillian Saydah was first across the line, with Edwards right behind in second. Junior Mary Egan crossed the line in fifth place for JVs; Williams was 21st.
Junior Erik Johnson bagged a second-place finish in last week’s boys slalom, with senior Jon Fobert next over the line for Bromfield in 15th. Jon was trailed by junior Sam Elkind in 18th, seventh-grader Brad Sampson right behind in 19th, junior Austin Parker 25th, and sophomore Ryan Williams 36th. Boys JV racers included freshman Jack Williams in 10th, eighth-grader Jarrod Revane 14th, and seventh-grader Nick Steele 21st.
In giant slalom this week, Johnson earned third place, Elkind eighth, Sampson 15th, and Fobert 16th. Junior Patrick Ware rounded out Bromfield’s GS points with a 24th-place finish, with eighth-grader Peter Donaldson 35th for varsity. On the JV side, Ryan Williams was eighth, Parker 11th, Revane 13th, freshman Sam Dyer 19th, Jack Williams 21st, and Steele 25th.
Bromfield’s regular season concludes with one more slalom race Monday, Feb. 14, when final team and individual rankings and invitations to State Championships in March will be on the line. Bromfield’s top five boys and girls then compete in a two-league All-Star Race, a prelude to State Championships, on Thursday Feb. 17.
