The Bromfield girls soccer team entered Monday’s game on an eight-game win streak, handling most opponents with ease. They met their match on Oct. 4, though, in the Oakmont Spartans, who were just 2-2-2 on the season.
The scrappy defenders of Oakmont stifled early breakaways by Bromfield sophomores Casey Magrath and Susannah Wright. Bromfield had five shots on goal in the first half, two by Magrath, one by Wright, and two by senior Grace Bilodeau.
Bromfield’s defense, however, continued to create opportunities for the offense, with strong play from defenders Moriah Arnold and Molly Papazian. Junior keeper Brittany Lee made saves on all three shots that came her way in the first half.
Late in the first half, Bromfield had its first good scoring chance when Bilodeau sliced through the defense and hit Wright with a pass, but Wright sent the ball sailing just above the cross bar, and the score remained tied at zero.
Opening the second half, Bromfield came out with new life, and Bilodeau forced Oakmont keeper Kristen Farley to make two saves in a row, one on a breakaway shot from the Bromfield midfielder and another on her shot off the rebound. Farley finished the game with five saves. Oakmont goalie Sarah Lupinsky, who played in the first half, had five saves.
Bromfield players were stopped on all six of their corner kicks in the game. They had three shots on goal off those opportunities but were unable to capitalize, largely due to the combination of Farley and the Oakmont defenders.
Bromfield hoped to pull ahead in the 77th minute, when Magrath cut through the defense and only had the goalie left to beat. However, Farley charged the ball and Magrath’s shot cut just outside the left post.
The game ended in a 0-0 tie, with Bromfield’s second half goalie Aly Marteney finishing with five saves on the afternoon. Magrath and Bilodeau both finished with three shots in the contest.
The Trojans are still undefeated, with an 8-0-1 record.
Bromfield’s next game is Friday, Oct. 8, at Harvard Park, against the Maynard Tigers.
