Bromfield varsity field hockey destroyed Murdock Monday afternoon on Bromfield’s home field. The Bromfield Trojans defeated the Murdock Devils with flying colors and demonstrated the importance of teamwork and communication.
The Trojans began the Sept. 27 game with nonstop scoring, resulting in a 3-0 lead during the first half. The exhausted Devils attempted to push back Bromfield, but the unstoppable pressure applied by the Trojans ended the game with a 5-0 victory. Bromfield’s record is now an impressive 5-1-1.
The game started with Bromfield utilizing passes in conjunction with their incredible speed, giving them a clear upper hand in the first half. Senior Maggie Rooney cleared her way across the field and scored on Murdock’s goalie, Cassey Maxfield, only nine minutes into the game. Rooney exclaimed after the game, “It’s my mom’s birthday today, and I got that goal for her!”
Two minutes later, Murdock switched to offense and tried several times to push the ball across the field. As a result, Bromfield junior Caroline Mazzola counterattacked and sent the ball flying into Murdock’s goal, increasing Bromfield’s lead to 2-0.
The relentless Trojans did not let up, and attempted to make a third goal. Senior Katherine Friedrich stroked the ball right past Murdock, ending the half with a 3-0 lead. Coach Silver understood that Bromfield was doing well, but still saw need for improvement. After the game, Silver said, “The next two games will be against very good teams, and I want my team to be prepared for that. We need to dodge better because there were too many hits on sticks. The defense needs to hit the ball flatter.”
As the second half began, Murdock managed to keep the ball pressed against Bromfield. Murdock attempted to score 10 minutes into the game, but Bromfield goalie, Katie Drummey, quickly blocked every stroke.
Bromfield eventually retook the game. Liz Smetana sprinted across the entire field and sent the ball soaring into Murdock’s goal, giving Bromfield the 4-0 lead. The future looked bright for the Trojans, but they were not ready to end the game just yet. Friedrich made a final rush down the field, and sprinted around the exhausted Murdock team. She flicked the ball into the goal, ending the game on a 5-0 lead.
The game ended with a crushing victory for Bromfield. The girls were tremendously proud of their achievement, and walked off the field with grins on their faces.
Katherine Friedrich commented after the game, “We achieved our goals because our passes were fluid and we communicated extremely well. We work together well, because we aren’t just a team, we are a family.”
