Youth worker, church volunteer, mother of Harvard man

Thelma (Mealy) Griffin, 93, of Blanchard Road died at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer Aug. 10, 2010. She was born in Troy, N.Y., on March 28, 1917, daughter of the late Chester and Marie (Krogel) Mealy.
She was a graduate of the Missionary Training Institute in Nyack, N.Y., and Gordon College in Boston, where she met her husband, the late John T. Griffin. She became the pastor’s assistant in each of his churches. She was active in youth work, directed youth and senior choirs, and produced pageants and cantatas.
Thelma was active in local and state work for the American Baptist Churches in Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. In Rhode Island, she held office in the Council of United Church Women, was secretary of the Association of Protestant Church Musicians, and president of the Council of Churches Radio and TV Choir. She was secretary at Darlington Congregational Church while living in Barnstable, and was member of the Cape Chorus.
In Littleton, Thelma was a member of the First Baptist Church and for several years was organist and choir director. She was secretary at Grotonwood Baptist Camp and Conference Center and sang in the Concord Chorus.
She was also a volunteer at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer and a member of the 60+ Club in Harvard. Her Christian desire was to do what was pleasing to her Lord.
She is survived by two sons, James Griffin of Oregon, and Randall Griffin of Harvard, and one grandson, Jonathan. She was also the sister of the late George Mealy and is survived by many spiritual children and friends.
At her request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. Burial will be private. A memorial bench is on the Davis Loop near the old cart path at Westlawn Cemetery in Littleton, where friends may “rest awhile.”
