Supports Sklar staying oncommittee

April 2, 2010

I’m writing in support of Stu Sklar for School Committee.

As the longest-serving member of the committee, Stu has a proven record of accomplishment that has helped our schools. Stu was instrumental in advocating for and helping to negotiate the contract to educate Devens students grades K-5. This contract is worth $500,000 to our schools, and is a big reason why we’ve been able to maintain them while districts around us keep cutting. Pushing for this contract wasn’t the most popular step at the time, but Stu did a great job explaining to town officials and citizens alike how this was a “win-win” for both communities. As a parent myself, I am so grateful that my child continues to benefit from a first-rate curriculum and small class size, despite the economic downturn.

On the state level, Stu has been a strong advocate for educational funding. He testified on Beacon Hill as a member of the Suburban Coalition and he has developed great working relationships with Rep. Jen Benson and Sen. Jamie Eldridge, ensuring that Harvard has a voice when budget decisions are made and policy is formulated.

Whether you speak to Stu at School Committee or at a meeting of the Bromfield School Council, where he also serves, or run into him at the General Store or on the soccer field, he’s glad to hear your views and to share his own. He has a genuine interest in the well-being of our children and can be found at most school events, cheering on his own kids and ours too. Let’s make sure he remains a presence on the School Committee.
