Students to celebrate Walk to School Day
In view of last year’s successful Earth Day Walk to School Day, and in celebration of the Harvard schools joining the Safe Routes to School program this year, Harvard students will join millions of children and their families across the globe on Wednesday, Oct. 7, participating in International Walk to School Day.
Walkers will gather at one of three meeting points and form a “walking school bus,” picking up any families and friends who live on the route. Families that live beyond these points are encouraged to drive or walk to the location. Walkers will be rewarded with light refreshments in the elementary school cafeteria before school.
Students who live too far away to walk to school can ride the bus or carpool that day.
Meeting locations
- Carlson Orchards’ parking lot
- Armstrong Road—between Bolton Road and East Bare Hill Road
- Depot Road soccer field parking lot
Walker routes
- Carlson’s—down Oak Hill, fork left on Old Boston Turnpike, left on Fairbank Street to rear entrance of elementary school cafeteria (playground side)
- Bolton Road to elementary school—proceed down Bolton Road to Mass. Ave. Cross at Mass. Ave. and proceed to rear of school.
- Depot Road—follow Depot Road to Ayer Road; go down the west side of Ayer Road to Town Hall and down Elm Street on the west side of the Common; Cross Still River Road in front of the Congregational Church. Follow foot path to the library and cross at the crosswalk at the elementary school; go to the rear of the school to enter the cafeteria from the playground side.
Schedule
- 7:45 to 8 a.m.: Meet at designated areas.
- 8 a.m.: Departure—parents escort “walking school buses”
- 8:20 to 8:30 a.m.: Arrive at elementary school cafeteria for light refreshments
- 8:45 a.m.: Students off to class; announcements to parents; cafeteria clear by 9:30 a.m.
