Lyme disease forum planned
Dr. Sam Telford will be the keynote speaker at a Lyme disease forum hosted by the Board of Health Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Cronin Auditorium at the Bromfield School. Telford will discuss the history of Lyme disease and offer ideas on how to combat it. Audience members will have a chance to ask questions following the presentation.
Halloween candy being collected
Residents interested in donating Halloween candy for residents on the Common to pass out to trick-or-treaters on Oct. 31 are invited to drop off the candy at the Police Department by Oct. 24.

U.S. service academy and military career forum
Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will host a forum Monday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria at Billerica High School, 365 Boston Road, for students from the Fifth Congressional District who are interested in attending one of the U.S. service academies. The forum, open to students in eighth through 12th grade, will offer information to students on how to pursue appointment to these elite educational institutions.
Representatives from the U.S. service academies and Tsongas’ nominations committee will be on hand to answer questions about the academies and the nomination process for admission.
Each year Tsongas nominates outstanding candidates for admission to one of four service academies: The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. (Army); the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Following a nomination from Congresswoman Tsongas, each student’s eligibility will be evaluated by the academies based on their academic and extra-curricular record, leadership skills, physical fitness, and other requirements.
Students and parents attending the forum will also have the opportunity to learn about other service academies, including the Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and Norwich University, which do not require a congressional nomination.
