I noticed recently that we have new street signs on Ann Lee Road. They look pretty much the same as the old ones, but they now say Ann Lees Road. Hmm, I thought, maybe that actually was her name. Nope, according to Wikipedia it was Ann Lee. Well, maybe it’s supposed to be plural? No again, it’s the only one in Harvard. The mystery deepens …
Have I been mistaken about what road I’ve lived on for 15 years? Got out the deed. Says here I live on “Ann Lee Road.” Phew, a senior moment averted. Maybe the extra “s” is for savings like 1-800-MATTRESS?
Judging by the cost of the signs, that seems unlikely. So, what do Mapquest, Google Maps and Yahoo Maps think? They all think it’s “Ann Lee Road.” Now I’m concerned. If it’s on the Internet it must be true, right? Could it be possessive? Like “Dan’s Place” or “Tiny’s Restaurant”? After getting run out of town 100 years ago, Mother Ann Lee would be pleased to hear that. And if so, when will Simon Atherton, Myrick, Babbitt, and all the other good Shakers be getting their new signs?
