We are writing to thank the Harvard Lions for their assistance in completing the mandatory yearly vision and hearing screenings at the Harvard public schools the week of April 13. We were very fortunate to have the Lions Club donate the use of the Central Massachusetts District 33A Lions SightMobile for our use. They delivered and set it up, provided training in its use, and graciously provided volunteers all week long to assist in the screenings. Many of these volunteers took time off from their regular jobs to support us.
The early detection of childhood vision and hearing problems is vital. Most eye problems can be corrected if they are detected and treated early. Some problems, if left untreated even for a short period, can result in permanent vision loss. In an effort to prevent these avoidable problems, school nurses have been designated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to provide annual vision and hearing screenings for students. With the availability of the Lions SightMobile, we were able to screen more than 750 students that week. This would have taken us much longer to do without the help of the Lions. We cannot thank them enough for all their help and dedication.
Without the SightMobile, we would have had to use our antiquated screening machines, which are not reliable and are prone to breakdown. These machines are scheduled to be replaced this year through the generosity of the Lions Club. Most residents have heard about and supported the Lions’ annual fruit sale. The funds collected through this event allow this sort of gift as tangible proof of all the good they do for our community.
