Swimming and boating lessons open for sign-ups
The Parks and Recreation Commission has announced that sign-ups are now open for the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program, which includes six swimming levels, and for sailing and canoe/kayak lessons, which will also be offered during all sessions. Instructors will be available at the town beach each day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to test swimmers for the appropriate level. A swimmer’s level will be adjusted by the instructor during the first week of lessons, if necessary.
This year there will be three two-week sessions; cost is $25 per session.
- Session 1: July 6 to 17
- Session 2: July 20 to 31
- Session 3: Aug. 3 to 14
Participants must be at least 8 years old and must pass a 10-minute swim test fully dressed (shoes, socks, long pants, long shirt), which will be administered prior to the start of the lessons.

DPW announces transfer station changes
The Department of Public Works announces that phase 1 of the transfer station modifications began Wednesday, May 6, and will be taking place over the course of the next three months.
Phase 1 implementation includes the opening of the new extended household trash drop-off area to the rear of the property. Users will now access all three trash compactors by driving up the driveway to the elevated rear of the property. The driveway will be separated into two lanes: one, the express lane to the right, is for access to the trash compactors only; the other lane, the pay lane, will be used by those wishing to drop off items for which a fee is required (tires, construction debris, refrigerators, etc.). During this phase, recyclables will be handled in the same way as they have been in the past.
Future phases will feature modifications to the recycling operations, most notably the conversion to single-stream recycling. Single-stream recycling will reduce the amount of sorting currently required. More details will be available prior to the conversion planned for later this year.

Devens has issued a notice marking the following upcoming military activities that will result in increased noise from Devens:
- Friday, May 15: MK19 familiarization fire, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, May 16: MK19 familiarization fire, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sunday, May 17: MK19 familiarization fire and demolitions training, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 26: sniper training with helicopter, noon to 10 p.m.
- Friday, May 29: MK19 qualification fire, noon to 4 p.m.
- Saturday, May 30: MK19 qualification fire, noon to 4 p.m.
- Sunday, May 31: MK19 qualification fire, noon to 4 p.m.
