School nurse Colleen Nigzus told the Press this week that there have been no more cases of the H1N1 flu virus reported in the Harvard schools. “Things seem pretty good,” she said.
Nigzus said that the Department of Public Health had recently conducted a survey to determine the number of students out sick in Massachusetts schools. Harvard’s rate of absenteeism is actually a little below average, she said.
Schools Superintendent Tom Jefferson notified parents on May 5 that a case of the H1N1 flu had been confirmed at the elementary school. The school was closed the following day for an intensive disinfectant cleaning of surface areas throughout the building.
As of May 18 a total of 5,123 cases of the virus had been reported across the country, with 143 in Massachusetts. Five deaths have been attributed to the virus nationwide, including one in Arizona, three in Texas, and one in Washington.
