Sunday morning’s snowfall meant tough sledding for the Bromfield girls indoor track team, as they had to make their way to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston in awful conditions to compete in the MSTCA Indoor State Relays. But in the end it was worth the trip: the final score of the competition was Bromfield 40, East Bridgewater 37, Pembroke 36, and Westwood 33 with more than 30 teams competing in the small school division.
“The team was able to defend its title and repeat as champions,” said coach Ray Dunn, “and it was a nail-biter down to the last race of the competition. We had outstanding performances from all of our runners.”
The meet started off with Bromfield winning the 4×800-meter relay in 9:48.83, with Lisa Reedich, Alyssa Swindells, Mimi Narbonne, and Emily Jones anchoring. The foursome ran the fourth fastest time in the state this year.
Jones returned later in the meet to anchor the distance medley, running a solid 5:01-mile split, with help from Sidney Durand (1,200 meter), Mimi Narbonne (800 meter), and Kim West (400 meter). The winning time was 12:47.81.
Bromfield senior sprinters Lexie Daniells, Niki Jordan, and Katherine Finnegan were joined by seventh-grader Alexia Lipman to win the 4×200-meter relay in 1:53.66.
“Katherine came from near last place to pass all of the runners in a single lap, which was an incredible personal effort,” said Dunn.
In the team standings, Bromfield trailed East Bridgewater by five points going into the final event. The girls on the 4×4 relay team—Durand, Daniells, West, and Finnegan—battled to second place in a time of 4:16.7 to give Bromfield the margin it needed to win the meet, and the season’s best time at this distance for the team.
