Have you ever wondered what you can do to make a difference? I did, and I found a way: I’m running the ING New York City Marathon 2008, a charity fundraiser, as a member of Team for Kids on Sunday Nov. 2.
My training has been steady, long, fun, and challenging. I completed an 18-mile “tune-up” in Central Park this past September with my great friend Stephanie and finished a 20-mile-long run with my husband (on his bike) on a rail trail a few weeks ago, and this past weekend ran the Lowell Sun’s half marathon.
In the past six years, Team for Kids members have raised more than $8.6 million to support running-based fitness and goal-setting programs for 50,000 schoolchildren a week in New York, California, Tampa, Tennessee, Alaska, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Indiana, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and South Africa. These classes target at-risk kids—most of whom don’t have physical education in their schools.
I’d like to invite people to help ensure that more kids benefit from NYRR’s youth services by sponsoring my run. Sponsors can pledge an amount for every mile I run, or donate a flat amount. All contributions are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged as such in a letter to you from Team for Kids. Most importantly, all contributions will go toward helping kids lead healthier, more productive lives. The New York Road Runner youth services programs teach goal-setting, nutrition, fitness, and running skills. Knowing how to make physical fitness a habit can reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other costly diseases in this population.
Thanks in advance for helping me—and thousands of schoolchildren. Online donations can be made via the TFK page on the ING New York City Marathon 2008 page:
