Tuesday, August 26: Fire personnel responded to a call received at 1:30 p.m. about a fire on Madigan Lane and discovered an illegal brush fire in progress. The homeowner was advised to extinguish the blaze. At 9:51 p.m. police received word that some of the cows believed to have escaped from a Groton farm earlier this summer and still on the lam, had been spotted near White Lane and Poor Farm Road. They called the Groton farmer to alert him to the sighting.
Wednesday, August 27: At 10:40 a.m. an officer noticed two dogs at the transfer station and, before they could become a nuisance, gave them a ride home. Harvard fire personnel responded to a call for mutual aid from Groton for a house fire in progress. They stood by to provide coverage while Groton addressed the situation, which turned out to be more smoke than fire. The owner of a vacant house on Littleton Road reported at 11:55 a.m. that a door had been broken and that someone had likely broken into the house. He said he didn’t find anything missing. The case is under investigation. A woman on Stow Road reported at 8:35 p.m. that it was probably over-medication that prompted her son to run naked through a nearby field. Police found the man and transported him to Emerson Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Thursday, August 28: At 11:45 a.m. a caller reported seeing a carload of kids acting suspiciously near Stow Road and Mass. Ave. The car was gone when police arrived to investigate. A sick fox reported on South Shaker Road at 3:24 p.m. was not found by police, but was reported to the animal control officer. At 6:03 p.m. a caller on Turner Lane reported that a neighbor was shooting a gun in his own backyard. Police spoke with the gun owner, who asserted that he had a right to shoot the gun on his own property. The case is under investigation. A caller reported a parked car on Depot Road at 7:45 p.m., speculating that there could be a drug deal in progress. Upon investigation, police found it was some people who were there to watch trains go by.
Friday, August 29: Littleton police called the station at 1:10 a.m. to advise Harvard police to be on the lookout for a red motorcycle that had failed to stop for police. The motorcycle was not found in Harvard. At 8:45 p.m. the ambulance with ALS on board transported a man to Leominster Hospital. A caller on Mettacomett Path reported at 11:28 p.m. that a Jeep had parked on the wrong side of the road, and that three youths had gotten out and run off into the woods. The responding officer located the young people and told them to move along.
Saturday, August 30: A caller on Warren Ave. complained that someone was shooting off fireworks nearby. Police found nothing in the area.
Sunday, August 31: Police responded to a mutual aid request from Boxborough police, who were at the scene of a roll-over accident on Interstate 495 at 4:33 a.m. Boxborough police said the driver had run off into the woods, but police were unable to locate the person. A woman stopped at the station at 10:48 a.m. to report that her husband had been followed home from Cambridge the previous night. She was concerned that whoever was following him might be able to get her home address from her husband’s license plate, but police assured her that information is not available to individuals—only to police. At 5:17 p.m. someone turned in a tennis racket found at Bromfield. It is still at the station. A motorcycle had a run-in with a young deer at Mass Ave. and Woodchuck Hill Road at 7:51 p.m. The motorcycle sustained minor damage. The deer succumbed, and the animal control officer was called to remove the carcass. Police were unable to locate the source of the sound of fireworks reported again on Warren Ave. at 9:16 p.m.
Monday, September 1: A caller on Poor Farm Road reported another sighting of the fugitive Groton cows at 7:35 a.m. They were gone when police arrived; police notified the Groton farmer believed to be the owner of the runaway bovines. Another fireworks complaint came in to the station at 8:06 p.m., this time from Depot Road. Police did not locate the source of the noise.
