Thanks to everyone who turned out for the 12th annual Memorial Day pancake breakfast at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Building this year. As you may know, the breakfast event was initiated by the Harvard UU Church Men’s Forum, spearheaded by Ed Pieters, to help bring Harvard folks to the parade. We strive to maintain that tradition while also raising some money for our local food pantry. This year, we netted $569, which is matched by the church, so $1,138 is being sent to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at Devens. The Harvard UU Social Action Committee would also like to extend a hearty “thank you” to the 25 adults and nine youngsters who worked enthusiastically to help make the breakfast run smoothly.
This year’s event was especially dedicated to the memory of Loaves and Fishes founder, Charlanne Van Wormer, who served this community so generously in countless ways for many years.
We also featured a “commemoration room” organized by Jane Andrew to honor all those men and women who have served, or are currently serving, in any of the U.S. military conflicts. A wonderful variety of books and DVDs was provided by the Harvard Library’s newest reference librarian, Barbara Raab, for viewing and perusing by visitors. Patriotic background music was played to emphasize the theme of Memorial Day.
We invite residents to come to next year’s pancake breakfast, to visit the commemoration room, and to stay in town for the parade.
