What they were saying in June 1983
Letter-writers to the editor of the old Harvard Post said:
“…patriotism is just another American Way consumed by the infectious and deadly ‘I, Me, My Syndrome.’” It used to be, said the writer, “that when times got tough Americans banded together, rolled up their sleeves, and worked together….All for one, one for all.”
Speaking about war, another writer commented:
“In today’s world, the solution is not arming to the detriment of all else.…On the great seal of the United States an eagle outstretches both talons; one grasps arrows, while the other holds out an olive branch.” The representation, he said, is “of maintaining balance, avoiding extremes.”
“I want peace only in a world where no man strives to dominate another’s life.”
