The Council on Aging decided to apply for a share of the funds offered by Minuteman Home Health Care Corp. for services to the elderly and to use them to furnish the “soon-to-be-opened” Hildreth House Senior Center.
Energy use in town buildings was reported to have dropped significantly between 1977 and 1981. The high school’s consumption dropped by 50 percent, the DPW building by 55 percent (due to a new boiler and burner), and the elementary school by 60 percent (due to lowering of the thermostat).
An invasion of gypsy moth caterpillars threatened to defoliate orchards and forests all over New England. Locally, people who argued that the scourge was of our own making, due to “man’s interference in the natural order,” felt the use of chemical weapons (i.e., poisonous insecticides) was justified in ending it. An editorial in the Post countered that man’s responsibility in bringing the creatures here didn’t justify destroying them completely.
