The Ayer Post Office is one of a handful nearby where residents can apply for a passport. Normally, passport applications are accepted Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., but on Saturday, May 17, the hours will be extended to 2 p.m. In a recent press release, Ayer Postmaster Edmund W. Potas was quoted as saying that the special hours should make it easier for parents with minor children applying for a passport, since both parents must accompany children younger than 16 years old.
New government regulations require passports for citizens traveling by air to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Passports cost $100 for people age 16 and older, $85 for children under age 16, and $75 for people renewing passports. The post office will also take passport photos for $15 each. Passport fees can be paid by cash or check only. Applications are available online at www.usps.com/passport.
