Bromfield senior, 17-year-old Lynn Jennings, won the AAU Junior Women’s National Championship in San Bernardino, Calif. Running for the Liberty Athletic Club of Cambridge, she won the 2.5-mile race with a time of 14:36.8. Naming her to the 1977 All-Scholastic Cross Country Team, the Boston Globe called her “the finest female high school distance runner in the country.”
Jennings went on to win several world cross country championships, and took home a bronze medal in the 10,000-meter race at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. During her career, Jennings set 10 American records and is a three-time World Cross Country champion.
March 1978
The National Grange sewing contest was sponsored locally by the Harvard Grange. Competition for the “thousands of dollars worth of prizes” was in the categories of garments made for adults, teenagers, and children.
This was also the month the Harvard Grange held its annual ham and bean supper, at the Congregational Church, at a fee of $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children. The well-attended supper raised $500–$600, which the Grange donated to a number of “worthy causes.”
