With all due respect to Mr. Jeff Harris, and in recognition of all the time he has given to our town, let me set the record straight.
In his Feb. 15 letter to the editor, responding to my Feb. 8 letter about negligent operations of our new library, he mentions he had inquired about heating controls and was supposedly told that the lighting controls were in working order. Not to worry, as the lights stay on only 30 minutes after closing.
First of all, 30 minutes of full building illumination seems rather long. Could this be cut down to, say, 15 minutes of partial building illumination, considering our town’s sizable electric bill?
Second, if this is true, it means our library closed at 1:30 a.m. on the night I made my earlier observation.
Of whom did he inquire? Is there anyone directly responsible? If there is, can that person respond to me?
During my multiple passes by the library that snowy evening, I noticed the lights stayed on without any vehicles in the plowed parking lot. To suggest cleaning people were in the building is nonsense.
Yes, it is true that I didn’t participate in the dog-and-pony library tours when I was a selectman. I chose not to drink the Kool-Aid some of our elected officials help themselves to. But I do remember the library committee’s promise to us of “not a penny more.” Kind of rings hollow now, especially with its request for $30,000-plus of town funds.
