Harvard voters flock to polls on Super Tuesday

February 8, 2008

Tuesday’s presidential primary drew 63.7 percent of Harvard’s active voters out to the polls. Sixty-five percent of the votes cast went to Democratic candidates, with Barack Obama pulling out a strong win—926 votes to Hillary Clinton’s 595. Obama’s win in Harvard wasn’t enough to sway state results, where Clinton came out on top. But for the Democrats, it’s still a tight race nationally: Super Tuesday brought Clinton 582 delegates, bringing her total to 825, while 562 went to Obama, giving him a total of 732. A candidate needs 2,025 to win the nomination.

On the Republican side, Mitt Romney pulled out a close win over John McCain in Harvard, with 409 votes to McCain’s 339, and although he won Massachusetts, with 51 percent of the Republican vote, it wasn’t enough to put him ahead of McCain nationally. McCain earned 511 delegates on Super Tuesday, bringing his total to 613, more than half of the 1,191 needed to win the Republican nomination. Romney earned 176 delegates on Tuesday, bringing his total to only 269.
