In the third game of the summer basketball league season, senior co-captain Brian Morgan led the team in a close game against the Clinton High School Gaels Monday, June 25. Morgan played a strong game, contributing a total of 10 points to the 27–31 score, but the team ended up four points short of victory at the final buzzer.
Bromfield’s first two points came from a pair of free throws sunk by junior Kevin Molinaro. In the middle of the first half, Morgan took the ball inside for a layup: he missed the shot, but immediately got the rebound and converted for two points. Junior Hugo Al-Homsi beat his defender a few plays later to earn a layup. At halftime, the Trojans trailed by four points, 9–13.
After a halftime break with coach Bob Thurston, the Bromfield boys picked up the scoring in the second half. Unfortunately, the Gaels matched the Trojans point-for-point. Senior Jon Fricchione was part of the first two second-half baskets. First, he took a pass from sophomore Zack Clements in for a layup. On the next play, he inbounded a ball under the hoop to Dan Ockene, also a sophomore. Ockene then faced up and dropped the ball in.
Morgan remained in control of Bromfield’s offense through the entire game, driving the ball inside for two points off a pass from Molinaro. He then took the ball into the middle of the paint to create his own jump shot. Finally, he tacked on three more points with a deep field goal. The Gaels played just a little more consistently than the Trojans throughout the game, however. Down the stretch even a Fricchione baseline jumper and an Al-Homsi three-pointer couldn’t top Clinton.
Morgan’s 10 points led the Trojans, as did his four rebounds and four assists. Al-Homsi added eight points and Fricchione finished with four. Ockene had three points and three rebounds, while Molinaro scored two points on a rebounds and an assist. Also playing for Bromfield were senior Salim Al-Homsi, sophomore Zach Clements, sophomore Mike Chile, sophomore Cody Osgood, and freshman Sean Thurston.
