Bromfield crews medal at state championships

Two Bromfield novice crews took home gold medals at the Massachusetts Public Schools Rowing Association state championships on the Merrimack River in Lowell May 27. Other Bromfield crews earned bronze medals or competitive times against 19 other schools, including Wayland-Weston, Shrewsbury, Worcester, Northampton, G-ROW Boston, Duxbury, Cambridge Rindge and Latin, Somerville, Boston Latin, Lowell, Cape Cod, Mystic Valley, and Lenox. Bromfield sent 43 rowers, who competed in seven races over a 1,500-meter course.

The girls second novice 4 boat—comprising Mackenzie Grant, Juillian Saydah, Molly Papazian, Katja Lierhaus, and veteran cox Christie Devlin—won gold medals with a time of 5 minutes and 8.5 seconds.

The boys second novice 4 boat also achieved a state champion ranking with a time of 5:29.3. Cox Matt Jones, David Choi, John Olsson, Kendall Cotton, and Ian Christie took home gold medals for their efforts.

The Bromfield girls varsity 8 boat earned a bronze medal with a time of 5:32.0, 11.8 seconds behind Wayland-Weston, which placed first. The team consisted of Hillary Rowse at cox and rowers Robyn Neshke, Maggie Cochrane, Ally Cohen, Anni Lierhaus, Amelia Mazzola, Taylor Cardosi, Margeux Holley, and Mary Beth Childs. The varsity 4 girls boat took fifth with a time of 6:21.1. Rowers included coxes Mariah Katz and Ellie Kendall, and Maggie Schulz, Allie Bollman, Georgia Gunner, and Maddie Moberly.

The boys varsity 8 boat coxed by Katie Papazian with rowers Darren Hartig, Jesse Fox, Mike Griffeth, Jordan Schnipke, Clarke Smith, Dan Child, Garrett Cosgrave, and Chris Martin came in fourth overall with a time of 4:53.6, just 9 seconds off the first-place finishers.

The boys third novice 4 crew (6:20.2) and the first novice 4 crew (5:48.1) took bronze medals in their races. The third crew consisted of Scott Blackwell, Nikko Koetsch, Jack Michaels, Sam Ginouves, and cox Aly Marteney; the first crew, Scott Myslinski, Mike Child, Connor Finnigan, Clark Jacobson, and cox Franny Minervini.

Two seniors, Mike Griffeth and Maggie Schulz, graduated this year, but more than 10 novice rowers joined the program.
