The Bromfield girls track and field team continued its dominance of the central Massachusetts region, capturing the District E, Class C Invitational meet at Crocker Field at Fitchburg State College Saturday, May 12. The Trojans earned 155 points overall, Sutton High School finished second with 58 points, and Ayer High School finished third with 36 points total.
The Trojans dominated the long-distance events, typical of the regular season. Sophomore Emily Jones continued her magical year by pacing the mile run. Her time of 5:03 was eight seconds better than the second-place finisher. Senior Eliza Ives finished her mile in 5:23, a performance good for third place. Finally, junior Kat Long ran a 5:34 mile, finishing fifth.
In the two-mile run event, junior Liz Lee slaughtered the field. Her time of 11:22 was not only good enough for first place, it was 46 seconds better than the next runner. Eighth-grader Emma Rothkopf came in fourth for the Trojans with a time of 12:35. In the 800-meter run, Bromfield had the top two finishers: junior Bo Dunn’s time of 2:19 put in her in first place, and sophomore Maddie Darden took second seven seconds later.
The Trojan women earned points in both hurdle events as well. Junior Hillary Lewis ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.51 seconds, finishing in first place. Fellow junior Marissa Dickson placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.70 seconds. Continuing its dominance in the meet, Bromfield also swept the relay events. The 4 x 100-meter relay team finished first with a time of 52.62 seconds. The 4 x 400-meter relay team earned its top spot with a time of 4:17. Finally, the 4 x 800-meter relay team finished with a time of 10:07. The time not only placed the team in first, but set a District E, Class C meet record.
In the 100-meter dash, three Bromfield finishers earned points. Sophomore Lexie Daniells placed third with a time of 13.53 seconds. Senior Lydia Maurer came in next with a time of 13.71, and Becca Rowse, an eighth-grader, had a time of 13.74. After the 200-meter dash, Bromfield again had three-point finishers. Junior Henley Siegrist finished second with a time of 27.50 seconds, while two eighth-grade Trojans finished fifth and sixth: Kim West, 28.62; and Julia Alexander, 28.98.
Bromfield also performed impressively in some field events. Sophomore Katherine Finnegan and junior Henley Siegrist placed second and third, respectively, in the long jump. Finnegan jumped 16 feet, five and one-half inches. Siegrist jumped 15 feet, eight and one-half inches. Senior Lydia Maurer threw the discus for the Trojans, and her distance of 120 feet topped the second-place finisher by 24 feet.
