Despite strong efforts from juniors Lindsey Burke, with 14 points and 13 rebounds, Henley Siegrist, eight points and four steals. and the rest of the team, the Bromfield girls varsity basketball team lost its first-round game in the Central Massachusetts district tournament to the Littleton Tigers last Wednesday, 35–39.
Burke and Siegrist began the first half with a basket each: a baseline jumper from Burke and an elbow jumper from Siegrist. A few minutes later Siegrist stole a Littleton pass on the defensive end and finished the play with a layup up court. The Trojans went into the half leading by four points.
Senior Rebecca Reusch started the second half with two quick baskets. Soon Burke took over the game for Bromfield, converting on eight layups. Even with Burke’s tough post work, Littleton overtook Bromfield with three minutes left in the game. As the Tigers lead grew, a deep three-pointer from senior Lydia Maurer couldn’t catch the Trojan women up.
Burke led Bromfield in both points and rebounds. Siegrist’s tough defense led to her steals and baskets throughout the game. Maurer and Reusch added five and four points, respectively. Sophomore Robin Neschke scored one basket, while junior Rosie Gatto and sophomore Morgan Smith each had a free throw.
The Trojans finished their season 15–5 and were co-champions of the Mid-Wach D League with West Boylston High School. With only two seniors on the team, Bromfield will look to repeat its title next year, led by returning starters Burke, Siegrist, and junior Catherine Johnson.
