The Trojans played aggressive pressure defense in their varsity basketball game last Friday, beating number-one-seed Nashoba Tech 61–49 in the district quarter-final tournament at Westford. The team’s effort led to a five-point lead at halftime against the Vikings, who came into the game with 19–1 record.
Bromfield kept up their defense in the second half, giving Nashoba Tech their toughest competition of the season. Bromfield finally pulled away in the last few minutes of the game to win by 12 points.
Senior co-captain Ian Rothkopf scored 27 points in the victory, hitting three three-pointers, and making all eight of his free throws. Senior co-captain Reed Harasimowicz added 11 points to the total that night, juniors Josh Lyvers and Ben Brown each scored six points, while junior Jon Fricchione had three. The following all had two points for the Trojans: senior Tim Smetana, junior Brian Morgan, sophomore Hugo Al-Homsi, and sophomore Kevin Molinaro.
“Ian had an enormous game,” Coach Scott Hoffman said of Rothkopf after the game. Hoffman also managed to use his entire bench that game. “Jon Fricchione, Toby [Frost], and Timmy [Smetana] all gave us big minutes tonight,” he said.
With the win, the Trojans advanced to the district semi-finals March 8 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to play the Bartlett High School Indians, a growing rival of the Trojans.
