Last Saturday the Littleton-Bromfield varsity ice hockey Tigers hosted the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Chargers. The Tigers won by a score of 6–1, to improve their record to eight wins and two losses.
No goals were scored in the first period. The Tigers out-shot their opponent 12–6 however. Seniors Ryan Chadwick and Matt Bohan and junior John Gill all had quality scoring chances only to be stopped by the BMR goalie. Near the end of the period, Bohan and fellow senior Charlie Broadbent each had spectacular defensive plays to stop potential goals.
Only 30 seconds into the second period Gill tipped the puck into the net for the first goal of the game. The Tigers scored three more goals before the period ended. Sophomore Bobby Hazel scored the final point on a rebound shot. It was his first career varsity goal. Bohan had an assist on the play. The period ended with a score of 4–1.
During the third period Bromfield students stepped up again to score two goals for the Tigers. Chadwick scored in front of the net with an assist going to Broadbent with five minutes remaining. The last goal of the game was set up by Broadbent, another assist, and scored by his younger brother, Jack, a sophomore. The Tigers out-shot BMR 44–26 throughout the game.
Bohan, a team captain, spoke of the Tigers’ effort that evening. “Despite having played with and beat stronger teams, the win over BMR was crucial to the team,” he said. “Historically the team hasn’t shown up to play against weaker competitors and has suffered unnecessary losses as a result. The win over BMR is evidence of a smarter, more disciplined Tiger hockey team.”
The team is only halfway through the season with important games remaining against Groton-Dunstable and Fitchburg. Gill said, “We want to continue our success into the second half of the season, and hopefully have a lot of momentum going into the playoffs. We definitely have the potential to take a lot of teams by surprise this year, so we just need to keep working hard.”
