The Bromfield girls had a great weekend at the Division 2 district race at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course Saturday, Nov. 11. One runner qualified for the state championship race, while another was the first in her grade to finish.
Bromfield finished ninth overall among the 26 schools that competed. The course was 3.1 miles (5 kilometers), with rolling hills—two fairly steep—the hardest course of the season, said Coach Matt Lynde, especially in the 30-degree weather.
Sophomore Tessa McClain sprinted past the finish line in sixth place out of 184 runners, with a time of 20 minutes, 45 seconds, qualifying for the state championships Saturday, Nov. 18, in Wrentham. Seventh-grader Molly Squire was the first seventh-grader to cross the finish line, passing several runners in the last 400 meters. Coach Lynde said that this race and season have been an “excellent showing for such a young team, [one] with great promise.” Bromfield’s seventh runner, seventh-grader Holly Fisher, unfortunately could not finish due to an injury.
The Trojans ended the season in second place, behind Littleton, in Division D of the Mid-Wach League. Coach Lynde said he was “very proud to coach this team,” adding that the runners managed to compete as individuals while supporting one another, working hard and having fun. Coach Lynde thanked the “two amazing seniors” who led the team: Julia Foley and Sophie Beckman, and he predicted that the young, strong core of the team would continue to do well next year.
The boys team finished in 12th place out of 35 teams competing in the districts. The members of the Bromfield team finished with an average time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. The boys wrapped up the season in second place with a 3–1 league record in Division D of the Mid-Wach League.
