The Bromfield boys track and field team sent four team members to the 2017 MIAA All-State Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, June 3, at Bridgewater State University. One team member also qualified for pole vault.
Senior Jamie Barrett competed in the All-State pole vault championship, which took place Thursday, June 1, at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, where he vaulted 13 feet to yet again break the Bromfield School record of 12 feet 9 inches, which he had set earlier this season. Barrett finished seventh overall in the pole vault. He also ran the 400-meter hurdles on June 3, finishing 25th at 1:00.65 minutes. Senior Tristan Cronin, who has had success in the 400-meter, finished 18th at the All-State meet in 51.97 seconds.
The 4×400-meter relay team of Cronin, Barrett, Alec Jones, and Luke Jones also competed. At the beginning of the season, the relay team was hopeful of breaking the school record, but with injuries, this didn’t happen. However, the 4×400 relay team still proved itself by qualifying for the All-State Championships, where it finished 27th at 3:35.32 minutes.
This year, the Bromfield boys track and field program will say farewell to nine seniors: captains Jamie Barrett, Paul Chapman, Tristan Cronin, Will Day as well as Nicholas Bibbo, Alec Jones, Joseph Mitchell, Riley Sennott, and Cole Stecyk.
Captain Will Day spoke of his track career, which began as a seventh-grader: “Through six years of track and field at Bromfield, I’ve had the opportunity to train and compete alongside some of the best teammates and friends I could ask for. I am definitely going to miss it next year.”
First-year track runner Alec Jones spoke of how track was different from what he expected. He mentioned how the competitors he was racing against were friendly and kind and that waiting for the starting gun to go off was less stressful than he had thought. Jones proved successful in the 400-meter hurdles: “I was really fortunate to run into my best event by accident. I was goofing off over hurdles one day in practice, and Coach Mr. B [Dave Boisvert] had me start doing drills. Before I knew it he had me racing in the 400 hurdles!” When asked what he will miss the most, Jones said, “The team itself and the satisfaction of improving a time.”
Cronin loved the balance between the social and competitive aspects of track: “Track is as social as it is competitive, and that is what made it so enjoyable to do year after year.”
