With the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association state divisional championships a week away, Bromfield’s varsity runners traveled to Wrentham on Nov. 1 to compete in the Frank Mooney Small School Invitationals hosted by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association.

Junior Ben McWaters won the junior/senior 5K race with a time of 16 minutes 10.20 seconds, and the team placed first among the 22 schools participating in the event.

Rosie Bradley placed second in the girls junior/senior 5K, setting a personal record with a time of 18:26.30. Her team tied for first place with Wakefield Memorial, but lacking a sixth runner, it was awarded second place among the nine competing schools.

Bromfield also entered runners in the meet’s two 5K sophomore races. Sophomore Kai Kemeza was second (17:20.20) and Micah Wiebe was fifth (17:42.00) among the boys in a field of 100 runners.

Boys coach Marisa Steele told the Press that team scores are “immaterial” at the Frank Mooney race because many teams enter their top runners in different divisions and some use the race as a practice session. The meet provides one last opportunity to tune up for the championship meets ahead, Steele said. “This was particularly helpful for a runner like Ben McWaters who missed several of the early season meets as he was recovering from a foot fracture,” she added

Both teams are headed to the MIAA Division 3 cross-country divisional championships at Willard Field in Devens on Nov. 8. The boys will race in Wave 3C at 11 a.m., and the girls, also in Wave 3C, at 11:45 a.m. The divisional races have replaced the sectional competitions of former years and are used to determine who qualifies to race in the Division 3 states the following weekend.
