The Bromfield girls varsity lacrosse team beat Westborough High School 18-4 Tuesday, May 3. The Trojans’ margin of victory was the widest of the season and marked a big accomplishment for Bromfield co-captain Tallie Dutkewych. The Trojans’ record now stands at 7-1, thanks to their senior leadership.
The Trojans won the draw controls 15-7 and took the lead immediately. Twenty-two minutes in, Westborough’s Delaney Vallee received a yellow card for a check to the head. Bromfield made six penalty goals from 8 meters, and the half ended at 14-3.
Both teams scored fewer points in the second half, and Bromfield’s defense held strong as younger players were given opportunities to score. “We had a few more kids taking shots and taking different spots, and I was able to get in my whole bench,” said Bromfield Coach Maesa Phongsamouth.
Senior Megan Hoggins was the top scorer this game with six goals and one assist, with Dutkewych close behind with four goals and three assists. Next came sophomore Kristin Podgorni with four goals, senior Julia Mara with two goals and one assist, and senior Chloe Scornavacca and sophomore Cavanna Aldrich with one goal apiece.
This game was particularly important to Dutkewych, who reached the 200th goal of her career. “She’s really a special player,” said Phongsamouth. “She’s one that takes care of the little things. You can tell on the field. She’s one of the fastest or the best out there.”
Dutkewych was happy with her accomplishment, saying, “I’ve been on this team since eighth grade, so it’s been a long ride for me, and finally we get to celebrate with 200 points.”
Having reached this milestone, Dutkewych is optimistic about the rest of the season. “I’m really happy about how far we’ve come since the beginning of the season,” she said. “We have a lot of talent and potential, so just by working together we’re going to get really good in the future.”
Bromfield’s next game was scheduled to be played at home against Algonquin Regional High School on Thursday, May 5. Algonquin is currently second to Bromfield in the Midland-Wachusett A League with a record of 5-3-0. The last time the two teams met, on April 12, Bromfield won 16-11.
