After an 11-day hiatus, the Littleton/Bromfield/Parker Tigers returned to the ice Wednesday, Jan. 7, to host the Lunenberg/Ayer Shirley Blue Knights. This was the second meeting of the teams this season and the outcome a near-carbon copy of their first, with the Tigers shooting their way to a 3-0 win once again.
The Tigers’ leading scorer, Littleton freshman Paul Doyle, got things underway with a power play goal assisted by Harvard’s Evan Piekos. The second period saw the Tigers add to their lead when co-captain Tyler Edwards scored with assists from Doyle and Harvard’s Zach Lizotte. Later in the second period, Littleton’s Ethan King scored with a quick shot following passes from Littleton freshman Jake Taglieri and Harvard freshman Liam Glew. The third period saw the teams exchanging scoring opportunities, but Parker School’s Charles Becker recorded his second shutout against the Blue Knights.
While the Tigers continue to have success against Coughlin Conference opponents, they continue to struggle against nondivision opponents.
Saturday night the Tigers hosted the Division 3 East Longmeadow Spartans. The Tigers struggled to match the Spartans’ speed and strength, resulting in multiple penalties for both teams. All of the evening’s scoring occurred while players were in the penalty box.
Following a first period in which the Spartans scored twice, the Tigers came out strong in the second period, pressuring the Spartans in their zone. The Spartans took a five-minute major penalty, and early in the powerplay took a second penalty, giving the Tigers a two-man advantage. Co-captain Piekos capitalized on the five-on-three, scoring with a shot from the offensive blue line following a pass from Doyle. A few minutes later, while still on the power play, the Tigers scored a second time to tie the game when Littleton freshman Gavin Werling scored his first high school goal with assists from Harvard’s Lizotte and Glew. Moments later, still down a player, the Spartans responded with another goal and pulled ahead 3-2.
The score would remain 3-2 in favor of the Spartans until late in the third period when the Tigers took more penalties, allowing East Longmeadow to score one last time for a 4-2 win.
Almost two-thirds of the way through the regular season, the Tigers are 6-0 in the Coughlin Conference with an overall record of 7-4.
